Serbia remains consistently committed to CoE’s values

Minister of Justice Nenad Vujić participated today in Strasbourg in the Informal Conference of Ministers of Justice of the Council of Europe dedicated to migration, stating that security and human rights are not in conflict but are mutually reinforcing.

Vujić said that Serbia confirms its firm and consistent commitment to the values of the Council of Europe – democracy, the rule of law and human rights.

The Minister emphasised that Serbia remains fully committed to the European Convention on Human Rights, the independence and authority of the European Court of Human Rights, and reaffirms its commitment to the principle of democratic security expressed in the Reykjavik Declaration.

Speaking about the contemporary challenges facing European states, he pointed out that serious organised crime, human trafficking and the instrumentalisation of migration are placing increasing pressure on national legal systems.

On the importance of cooperation with third countries in managing migration and returns, the Minister noted that it should be implemented in accordance with international human rights standards, which remains key to achieving sustainable and credible solutions.

He also recalled the importance of protecting the democratic order, adding that in the current geopolitical context, attention should be paid to the risks associated with the instrumentalisation and abuse of migration.
