Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government Snežana Paunović met today with Head of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Serbia Soufiane Adjali to discuss the continuation of successful long-standing cooperation in resolving the issue of legal invisibility.

The meeting also discussed improving mechanisms for exercising the right to birth registration.
Since 2012, the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government and UNHCR have been jointly implementing measures that have enabled the establishment of efficient systems for identifying and resolving cases of persons who are not registered in civil records, have no citizenship or residence.
The results achieved through changes to the legal framework, the abolition of administrative fees and the training of officials have contributed to Serbia becoming recognised as an example of good practice within the framework of UNHCR’s “I Belong” global campaign to end statelessness.
Today, cases of legal invisibility in Serbia are extremely rare, confirming the success of the measures implemented and the effective coordination among institutions.
