Serbian Minister of Finance Mladjan Dinkic and Executive Vice President and Head of Telenor's Central/Eastern European operations Jan Edvard Thygesen signed the sale contract.
Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said after the signing ceremony that this is a strong stimulus for the development of Serbia and expressed belief that the arrival of Telenor will move other foreign investors to invest in Serbia likewise or even more.
He welcomed the Norwegian company and stressed that the arrival of Telenor to Serbia proves that Serbia is stable legally, politically and economically.
Serbian President Boris Tadic said that Telenor’s arrival provides impetus for the development of the Serbian economy noting that it will open new perspectives, including an improved living standard for Serbian citizens.
Dinkic said that out of the sum Telenor agreed to pay for Mobi 63, €1.155 billion will be streamed to the state budget.
He stressed that the contract signed with Telenor is the biggest privatisation since the transition process in Serbia started, not only by the amount of money gained, but also by the manner of its realisation which was clear and transparent.
Serbian Minister of Economy Predrag Bubalo said that Telenor comes from a friendly country and that with this contract, the years-long issue of Mobtel was resolved.
There were two large transactions in one month, the arrival of German pharmaceuticals company Stada to Serbian drugmaker Hemopharm and Telenor. With their respective stocks on the world stock exchanges growing, which shows that investors behind those companies support their moves, this trend also call on other foreign investors to come to Serbia, said Bubalo.
Thygesen expressed satisfaction with the acquisition of Mobi 63 taking only one month as well as with the fact that Telenor is again in the Balkans after ten years.
He said that Serbia has a good legal framework for the development of telecommunications and recalled that Telenor has over 100 million clients in 13 countries.
Telenor’s CEO for Serbia Stein-Erik Vellan said that new days for the Serbian telecom market are coming with the arrival of Telenor as this company will support economic development and create a business model that will serve as an example for others.
Quality is our main feature, he said and stressed that there are products and services in the Serbian company that can be sold on markets of other countries where Telenor operates.
