UNMIK’s presence in Kosovo and Metohija of crucial importance for preserving peace, stability

Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Đurić stated today that the United Nations (UN) is the most important international organisation when it comes to preserving the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Serbia, emphasising that the country attaches exceptional importance to the activities of this organisation.

During a meeting with Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Acting Head of the UN Mission in Kosovo and Metohija (UNMIK) Milbert Dongjoon Shin, Đurić highlighted the need for the Mission to continue to fully implement its mandate in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1244, which represents the fundamental legal framework for preserving peace and stability in Serbia’s southern province.

Considering the upcoming session of the UN Security Council dedicated to the work of UNMIK, the Minister emphasised that it is of particular importance for Serbia to preserve the continuity and dynamics of these sessions in an open format, so that the international public is objectively informed about the situation on the ground and all the challenges facing the Serb population in Kosovo and Metohija.

The Minister underlined that the continuous attacks and measures directed against the health, education and judicial systems in the north of Kosovo and Metohija, as well as the lack of political will from Priština to implement the obligations under the Brussels Agreement, are a clear political message and an intention to further aggravate the living conditions of the Serbian people.

He pointed out that the upcoming local elections, scheduled for 12 October, are of crucial importance for the survival of the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija.
