Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, stated today, after a meeting with the Somali delegation headed by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, that our country is grateful to Somalia for its stance on non-recognition of the so-called Kosovo.
In a joint address to journalists at the Palace of Serbia with Barre, Macut also emphasised that Serbia fully supports the integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia and understands the position this country is currently in.
He assessed that economic cooperation between the two countries has not kept pace with political relations and expressed hope that more intensive work will be done on this issue in the coming period.
The Prime Minister pointed out that the two countries have shown interest in cooperation in all areas, with a special emphasis on education and health, or rather on the education of personnel for the needs of the health sector in Somalia.
The Somali Prime Minister stated that his country is ready to elevate relations with Serbia to a high level and that it is committed to further enhancing ties between the peoples of the two countries.
He noted that the Somali delegation had very successful talks with the Serbian Prime Minister on several topics, including trade, security cooperation, human resource development and cooperation in the field of healthcare.
According to him, since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the two countries have made significant progress, which has been built on historical cooperation and mutual respect, which has led to the laying of the foundation for today's partnership.
Recalling that the relationship between the two countries was established in the 1960s, Barre said that Somalia, as a country with enormous potential, offers strategic cooperation in the economy, especially considering its location.
He stated that the agricultural sector, gas and oil are some of the areas in which Somalia can cooperate with the relevant institutions in Serbia, and at the same time invited delegations to exchange visits, so that the partnership between the two countries can become strategic.
