Serbia, Somalia committed to developing cooperation in field of defence

Minister of Defence Bratislav Gašić and Minister of Defence of the Federal Republic of Somalia Ahmed Moalim Fiqi assessed late yesterday that there is potential for establishing cooperation between the two countries in the field of defence, which would contribute to the development of overall bilateral relations.

During a working dinner, Gasić underlined that Serbia is a military neutral country that develops and improves relations with other countries and alliances in line with its own interests, with the aim of strengthening regional and national security.

He emphasised that for Serbia, the main security threat is the process of secession of the territory of the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija and that the recognition of the so-called Kosovo by a certain number of countries reflects negatively on the strengthening of trust and cooperation, and slows down the process of stabilisation of the region.

The Minister pointed to the importance of engagement of Serbian Army members in the EU mission for training Somalia’s security forces since 2012 with a staff officer, and since 2013 with a medical team as part of a level 1 hospital.

Fiqi, who is on an official visit to Serbia as part of a Somali delegation, expressed his belief that the cooperation between the two states will develop in mutual interest.
