Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Đurić met today in Washington, D.C., with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Đurić stated that they discussed strategic dialogue between Serbia and the United States starting very soon, raising relations between the two countries to a level we have not had in previous generations.
He pointed out that there is a high awareness on both sides that a historic opportunity is now being offered for relations, which have gone through various phases and oscillations, to be built on completely new foundations.
According to him, Serbia, as an independent country that independently conducts its foreign policy, appears as a natural partner for the administration of President Donald Trump, which wants to establish cooperation with countries in our part of the world on fair grounds in a new way.
Đurić noted that, in addition to political similarities, there is great interest in deepening economic cooperation through specific projects in the fields of energy, infrastructure, new technologies, science, as well as in the fields of education and culture.
The head of Serbian diplomacy added that during today's meeting, the support of the US administration for issues that are important to Serbia was also requested.
We sought understanding for the difficulties we are facing in connection with the verdicts against Milorad Dodik and the pressures that Republika Srpska is facing, Đurić noted.
He expressed his belief that, regarding the issue of Kosovo and Metohija, he managed to convey part of what our people on the ground are facing – pressures, persecutions, the takeover of institutions, and even that the Serbian Patriarch and the Serbian Orthodox Church are experiencing pressures.
The Minister emphasised that the treatment of the representatives of our country during this visit was truly a reflection of the high respect and ambition of the US administration to build better relations with Serbia.
The Serbian Foreign Minister also pointed out that the topic of tariffs was part of the conversation, expressing the expectation that the improved political relations between Serbia and the United States will have a positive impact and that the relevant teams will continue negotiations on this topic.
He particularly emphasised that Secretary of State Rubio clearly conveyed the position of President Donald Trump and the entire US administration to have better relations with Serbia.
In a conversation with US Special Envoy for Hostage Response Adam Boehler, he said that Serbia will continue to call for the immediate and unconditional release of all remaining hostages kidnapped by Hamas in southern Israel, including dual Serbian-Israeli citizen Alon Ohel.
Đurić informed his interlocutor about Ohel’s extremely serious health condition, including the serious injuries he suffered as a result of the wounding.
The Minister reiterated Serbia’s readiness to provide all types of assistance and support, and expressed hope that all hostages will be reunited with their families as soon as possible.
