In its session on July 16 in Vilnius, Lithuania, the World Heritage Committee decided to extend the site of the Decani monastery, which was included on the list in 2004, by adding to it the Patriarchate of Pec, Gracanica monastery and the Church of the Virgin of Ljevisa.
Serbian Ambassador to UNESCO Dragoljub Najman told Tanjug news agency that the Serbian project was accepted amidst strong competition and explained that the decision was influenced by the value of the monuments and awareness of international community that these monuments are in danger.
Najman said that the decision of UNESCO’s committee to include three Serbian medieval sites at once to its list is a big success.
The extended sites, dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, were also placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger due to difficulties in its management and conservation stemming from the region's political instability.
The 21-member World Heritage Committee decided that these sites are now to be known as Medieval Monuments in Kosovo.
