Advancing cooperation with Japan in artificial intelligence, innovation

Belgrade/Tokyo, 26 June 2025

State Secretary at the Ministry of Science, Technological Development and Innovation Marija Gnjatović, PhD, met with Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan Hideto Kawasaki to identify and formalise areas of cooperation in science, innovation and artificial intelligence (AI) development between the two countries.

At the meeting held in Tokyo during the official visit of the Ministry’s delegation to Japan, Gnjatović noted that Serbia is committed to investing in and developing AI across various sectors.

She presented to her interlocutor the AI ecosystem in Serbia, which has achieved excellent results so far. Serbia has the fastest-growing ecosystem in this part of Europe, and there is full government support for enhancing this sector and advancing AI to boost economic development.

The State Secretary also presented the BIO4 Campus project to the Parliamentary Vice-Minister and announced the signing of a memorandum between Japanese biotechnology ecosystem company Alloy Therapeutics Inc. and the BIO4 Campus.

She also recalled the signed Memorandum of Understanding with Japanese pharmaceutical company Takeda, noting that the implementation of a pilot project has begun with BIO4 Campus tenants on the use of AI to predict rare diseases.

Kawasaki conveyed that Japan is ready to continue its partnership with Serbia along the established path and emphasised the country’s openness to proposals for launching new forms of cooperation.
