Economic empowerment, poverty reduction through science, technology

Belgrade/Beijing, 11 June 2025

State Secretary at the Ministry of Science, Technological Development and Innovation Marija Gnjatović, PhD, took part in the global Forum on Goals and Practice of Poverty Alleviation Through Science and Technology, held in the People’s Republic of China as part of the international Belt and Road Forum.

Gnjatović emphasised the importance of science and innovation in combating poverty and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as Serbia’s commitment to contributing to progress in these areas at the global level.

The State Secretary stated that science and technology are key pillars in the fight against poverty, adding that in Serbia, projects funded through the Science Fund and the Innovation Fund are making use of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and digitalisation to improve key sectors.

For example, Serbia is developing artificial intelligence tools to optimise agricultural production, which directly supports rural communities where poverty is most widespread, Gnjatović noted.

She noted that one of the key projects of this kind is the Science for Society programme, which enables small-scale farmers in Vojvodina to increase their yields by 15% by using smart irrigation sensors.
