Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Titov agreed that the solution to the future status of Kosovo-Metohija must not be imposed but a result of a compromise and direct dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, and added that while seeking a solution, regional stability must be preserved.
Kostunica pointed out that the solution to Kosovo must be based on the principle of international law while at the same time preserving the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. The solution should be sought in the form of essential autonomy for Kosovo-Metohija within Serbia's borders, just like similar issues are resolved in democratic states, he added.
Kostunica also stressed that Serbia particularly appreciates and welcomes Russia's position on the matter, its support and belief that international law is universal and must be respected.
Titov pointed out that Russia advocates the respect of universal principles of international law while finding the solution to the province's future status.
He stressed that Russia also supports the idea of basing the Kosovo talks on the Contact Group's guiding principles adopted last year in New York, as well as on the conclusions from the Group's ministerial meeting, held in January this year in London.
Kostunica acquainted Titov with Belgrade's initiative on further steps for solving Kosovo’s status, as well as with issues that should make it onto the agenda of the Belgrade and Pristina negotiating teams in Vienna.
The collocutors also discussed the bilateral cooperation between Serbia and Russia and pointed out that their relations are extremely satisfactory and that there is enough room for further improvement of economic cooperation.
