Addressing participants in the Crans Montana Forum which started yesterday in Albania's capital, Popovic said that in the region of southeastern Europe, which is on the road to European integration, energy development is of great importance.
He said that the creation of a single energy market is the only way to efficiently overcome the problem of electricity shortages, which were noticed in most in Kosovo-Metohija last winter, but that Montenegro, Macedonia and Albania also have that problem.
The head of the economic team underlined that the problem of electricity shortages in Kosovo-Metohija had been mitigated only owing to understanding and help from the Serbian government and the Serbian Electric Power Industry.
Popovic highlighted the importance of the southeastern Europe Energy Community Treaty, signed by the EU, Serbia, Montenegro, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Romania, Croatia and Bulgaria, as well as UNMIK.
This Treaty is the corner-stone of Serbia's European integration and of all other countries in the region which aspire to join the EU, Popovic stressed and announced that the Serbian parliament will soon ratify the Treaty.
The Treaty also creates conditions for incorporating the energy market of southeastern Europe into that of the EU, which means that there will be no obstacles in the flow of electricity throughout Europe.
In his statements to Albanian private television Klan and one of the leading Albanian dailies Shqip, Popovic called for closer economic cooperation between Belgrade and Tirana because Serbian firms are interested in entering the Albanian market.
Popovic also stressed that the problem of Kosovo-Metohija can be solved only through dialogue, with respect for interests of both Serbs and ethnic Albanians.
