The National Council for Higher Education held its constitutive session today at which Professor at the Law Faculty, Belgrade University, Obrad Stanojevic was unanimously elected as president of the council.
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Pristina in Kosovo-Meothija Camil Dolicanin was elected as deputy president.
It was also decided that the next meeting of the council should be held on May 18, when the council members will elect members of the Committee for Accreditation and will adopt its rules of procedure.
The National Council for Higher Education consists of 16 members that were appointed by the Serbian parliament at its session held in April. After electing its president and deputy president the council will be able to begin work after a long pause.
The council has been established according to the Law on higher education which was adopted in September 2005 with the aim of securing the development and advancement of the quality of higher education.
This body will monitor the development of higher education and its compatibility with European and international standards, propose the policy on higher education, establish standards and the procedure for accreditation of institutions for higher education.
Members of the council will give their opinions on the policy of enrollment in institutions for higher education, propose rules and standards for the work of institutions for higher education and establish standards for self-evaluation and the assessment of the quality of university faculties.
