Speaking at a round table themed "The role of the media in positioning a tourist destination", which was held as part of the 28th international tourism fair at the Belgrade fairgrounds, Dimitrijevic announced that Serbia will pay special attention to the development of rural tourism, which should reduce poverty, increase employment and stop migration.
The Minister said that Serbia projected the policy of tourism growth on the principle of sustainable development and specified that out of 11 products in world tourism, it can successfully develop all but maritime tourism.
He voiced hope that the number of foreign tourists will increase this year since the state set aside €10 million for tourism development. He also recalled that investment worth €50 million in various tourist activities is expected, with the aim of achieving €2 billion in revenues by 2015.
Tunisian Minister of Tourism Tijani Hadad, who is also chairman of the Executive Council of the World Tourism Organisation, pointed out that each country should develop its specific tourist features and offer diversified programmes.
Hadad explained that Tunisia is famous for sea tourism, but a few years ago it started enriching its offer with Saharan tourism, hunting, spear-fishing and wave therapy in order to compete as successfully as possible with the growing competition in the world.
He said that tourism, in addition to the economic aspect, is a significant factor in bringing different peoples together and precisely for that reason, the role of the media in the promotion of tourism is so significant.
