The signing of the agreements was attended by Prime Minister Miloš Vučević, European Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Olivér Várhelyi and Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Serbia Anke Konrad.
The municipalities of Prijepolje, Novi Pazar, Majdanpek, Bajina Bašta, Niš and Rača will participate in the project, which will provide financing for the construction and reconstruction of up to five district heating systems that replace polluting and inefficient fossil fuels.
Đedović Handanović stated that the first phase of the project has been completed this year, with the support of the governments of Germany and Switzerland, when a biomass heating plant in Majdanpek was put into operation, adding that the EU has been our most important trading partner and biggest investor and donor for years.
Miščević said that the second phase of the project refers to the addition of working capacity to the existing heating plants and the installation of new boilers in the boiler rooms, adding that the first phase of the project led to a reduction in carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide emissions.
European Commissioner Várhelyi pointed out that this is Serbia's new chapter towards the energy transition and that the first phase of the programme has already shown visible results, which is support for Serbia's green agenda.
Ambassador Konrad stated that since 2000, the German government has allocated almost €1.5 billion for Serbia's energy sector.
