Opening a seminar on the Poverty Reduction Strategy, organised by the US International Republican Institute, Labus said that this objective is ambitious but possible to achieve, providing that the public is aware that it is a priority.
He presented the data that 10% of Serbia's population lives below poverty line and that the poorest parts of the country are southeastern and western Serbia.
In eastern Serbia, there is 23.5% of population that lives below poverty line and 13.2% in western Serbia. In Vojvodina, that figure is 8% and in Belgrade 4.2%, Labus said.
According to Labus, the poorest population mainly consists of people with low level of education, the unemployed, pensioners and people from rural areas.
The Poverty Reduction Strategy is part of the process of European integration in Serbia, and the government's priority is the EU accession and the Strategy's implementation.
Labus said that one of the most important preconditions for reducing poverty is the country's rapid economic growth.
Labus concluded that poverty cannot be reduced without large investments and creation of new jobs.
