Labus said that Serbia's natural resources are limited and pointed out that sustainable development is also based on educated capable people, i.e., human capital and intellectual resources.
He voiced hope that the sustainable development strategy will be adopted by the end of the year and that its application will start in 2007, when Belgrade will host the European ministerial conference on sustainable development.
Labus said that the recent landslides in Serbia can be explained by human negligence, noting that the drainage channels and the Djerdap hydro plant have resulted in higher levels of underground water in Vojvodina.
The Deputy Prime Minister repeated his expectation that Serbia will be ready to join the EU in 2012 and said that the EU accession process depends only on us. He said he is sure that by that time many problems in the EU will have been solved and added that Serbia should do its part of the job and prepare itself for the EU membership.
Over 150 representatives of ministries, institutes and agencies of the Serbian government, universities, the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Serbian Chamber of Commerce, unions, associations of employers, international organisations, embassies, development agencies and non-governmental organisations are taking part in the conference.
