Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said today on visit to landslide-affected village of Bogdanje near Trstenik that all those who were left homeless as a result of landslide will get new homes.
After meeting with families whose houses were damaged, Kostunica said that Serbia has faced another natural catastrophe, noting that such things happened before but this one is graver and on a larger scale.
He said that the visit of landslide-affected areas in central Serbia began in Bogdanje because the situation in this village is gravest.
The reaction of local authorities and the Ministry of Capital Investment was timely, the Prime Minister said adding that citizens can count on the government’s support.
Kostunica said that the government has always taken care of anyone who was left homeless and recalled the fast reaction of the government last year in the
flood-stricken Banat region.
He pointed out that the situation on the ground is better already, and added that people whose houses are at greatest risk have been evacuated to houses of their relatives, while a certain number of plots were allocated for the construction of new houses.
Kostunica said that everything concerning the purchase of plots for constructing new houses will be financially regulated. He added that the government will adopt a number of measures in a session tomorrow in a move to carry out the government’s policy ensuring that all those who have remained homeless get new houses.
Kostunica expressed his expectation that life will soon return to normal in this part of Serbia.
Serbian Minister of Capital Investment Velimir Ilic, who together with Kostunica is visiting the landslide-affected areas, said that work began on locations for new houses today. He added that construction will begin on Monday.
Ilic pointed out that funds have already been allocated for preparation of works and an agreement will be reached today with local firms on the beginning of works.
He stressed that all measures have been taken for the permanent housing of population outside the landslide zone. He expressed gratitude to local inhabitants for their discipline and cooperation with municipal and republic authorities.
Kostunica and Ilic visited the village of Celije near Brus and told citizens that all damage from the landslide will be repaired.
