Holding a lecture attended by Faculty of Economics students of the Novi Sad University themed “Serbia in Negotiations with the EU – Perspectives and Challenges,” Labus said that on Serbia’s path to the EU there are political challenges such as cooperation with the tribunal in Hague, the future of the state-union of Serbia-Montenegro, resolving the future status of Kosovo-Metohija and the adoption of a new constitution.
He recalled that according to estimations by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the country has achieved two thirds of the qualifications for the EU, but the shorter and harder part of the journey remains. He added that it is intended that implementation of the SAA begins by 2007 and that by 2012 the country will be ready to enter the EU.
He expressed his expectation that negotiations with the EU will continue at a “slower pace”, and recalled that cooperation with the Hague is the country’s international obligation and there is no doubt it will be continued.
“Instead of the second round of official negotiations with the EU which are scheduled for April 5, we are expecting the so called advanced standing dialogue in which our and EU representatives will analyse all that has been done in the stabilisation and association process,” Labus explained.
