In a statement to the Tanjug news agency following his three-day visit to Sofia, where he stayed at the invitation of Bulgarian Minister of Justice Georgi Petkanov, Stojkovic said that application of new kinds of penalties bear special significance for resocialisation of minor offenders and facilitation of their return to normal life.
The minister recalled that, along with the Criminal Code, new laws on penalties and underage offenders have recently been passed in Serbia. All these legal documents envisage new kinds of penalties, such as community service or being put under surveillance.
Stojkovic said that application of these penalties is highly significant because they do not have the negative consequences of a prison sentence.
Bearing in mind that Bulgaria is just a step from the EU, Stojkovic stressed that the experience and opinions the representatives of the Bulgarian judiciary shared during his visit are highly significant for the reform of Serbian judiciary and incorporation of fundamental principles in the Serbian constitution.
He expressed satisfaction with the talks in Sofia and stressed their importance in the remaining tasks that need to be done in the process of judicial reform, especially in implementation of laws that have already been passed.
Stojkovic yesterday met with
Bulgarian Minister of Justice Georgi Petkanov, the President of Supreme Judicial Council and representatives of the Bulgarian Supreme Court and Prosecutor’s Office.
