Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic spoke in Tokyo with Senior Executive Vice President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Junichi Yamada.
The topic of discussion was the deepening of cooperation with this institution, as well as new projects in the field of energy, primarily support for the construction of the reversible hydroelectric power plant Bistrica.
JICA has already expressed its interest in the Bistrica RHE construction project, which is one of the priority projects in the Baseline of the Energy Infrastructure Development Plan and Energy Efficiency Measures for the period up to 2028, with projections up to 2030, which was adopted by the government of Serbia in June.
Djedovic Handanovic stated that Serbia is facing a cycle of large investments in the field of energy, where investments in the amount of 15 billion euros are needed in the next ten years, in order to ensure greater energy independence, security of supply and reduce the harmful impact of the energy sector on the environment.
The Minister pointed out that Japan has been one of Serbia's biggest bilateral donors for more than two decades, as well as that Japanese companies have been increasingly present in Serbia in recent years as investors.
We have had good relations with JICA and support in achieving these goals, primarily through the construction of the desulphurization plant at the "Nikola Tesla A" Thermal Power Plant, which is in its final phase, she pointed out.
Last week, as she stated, we reached an agreement that the facility in TENT A would be completed at the beginning of the year, and today we confirmed it.
I believe that Japan can be one of the important partners of Serbia in the process of energy transition, that through this cooperation not only financing for certain projects can be provided, but also the transfer of knowledge, expertise and new technologies, on which the green transition rests, the Minister said.
