He said that the Ministry, in accordance with that, expects a reduction of unjustified high trade margins of individual trade chains for many products.
Sreckovic said that it is unacceptable that in Serbia, a predominantly agricultural country, has higher prices of basic foodstuffs than other countries in the region, and also that individual trade chains charge margins higher than 25%, while the average in neighbouring countries is between 8 to 15%.
He explained that prices of these products have a negative effect on living standards of citizens, on macroeconomic stability and the inflation rate. He recalled that even if Serbia is firmly committed to building a liberal market economy, it will not tolerate monopoly and cartel like behaviour, which leads to the formation of economically unjustified high prices.
“We will provide incentives for competition, and for the arrival of new foreign trade chains. We are determined that the Law on Consumer Protection and the Law on the Protection of Competition are fully implemented,” said Sreckovic.
