Director of the Veterinary Directorate and Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Dejan Krnjajic said today that in the last two months some 800 charges have been filed for violating the order for domestic poultry to be kept in an enclosed space.
In a statement to the Tanjug news agency, Krnjajic said that penalty fines are highly unpopular but a necessary measure for control and prevention of bird-flu from wild birds to domestic poultry.
He pointed out that Serbia is not on the main route of migratory birds, which is the reason why a single case of bird-flu has not been detected yet, and stated that migratory birds are constantly being monitored, especially wild swans, which have been identified as the most common carriers of the H5N1 virus.
Krnjajic stressed that luggage checks and vehicle disinfection have been performed on all border crossings expect with Macedonia, in order to prevent the virus entering Serbia from countries where the virus has been positively identified.
