During a joint address to the media after the talks with Attaf, Dacic recalled that Algeria has not recognised the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo and that it thereby showed that it respects the principle of border protection, that is, the territorial integrity of countries.
It is also of great importance to us that Algeria was elected as a non-permanent member of the Security Council and it is very important that a member of that body is our friend, Dacic pointed out and added that Serbia will take Algeria's interests into account when it comes to regional issues and problems concerning Algerian interests in that part of the world.
We are ready to exchange opinions, to inform each other about the situation in our region and the region where Algeria is located. We are directed towards the United Nations and accordingly, we think that the UN should have a key and main role when it comes to the issue of Kosovo and Metohija and the issue of Western Sahara and other regional issues, said the First Deputy Prime Minister.
He pointed out the importance of decades of friendship and diplomatic relations established with Algeria 61 years ago.
According to him, the mixed committee for cooperation between Algeria and Serbia is being reactivated and the Serbian government has appointed Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Jelena Tanskovic as co-chair from our side.
It is very important for that committee to create a road map on how to strengthen cooperation in various areas, Dacic said, pointing out that Serbia and Algeria have a foreign trade exchange of around $200 million and that this exchange can be much larger because the potentials are great in different areas, including defence, culture, education, sports.
Ahmed Attaf pointed to the similarity of the situation in Kosovo and Metohija with that in Western Sahara.
The issue of Western Sahara is a destabilizing factor in the entire region. Failure to solve this matter still hampers the building of regional integration which would be good for all countries in the region. The issue of Kosovo and Metohija was born from the violation of an important security principle, which is the inviolability of borders, Attaf underlined.
He confirmed that Algeria and Serbia will continue to exchange opinions, discuss and inform each other in the spirit of solidarity and respect for the interests of the two countries.
