Speaking at a conference on international navigation opened by Austrian Vice Chancellor Hubert Gorbach, Ilic said that Serbia has a great interest in the improvement of Corridor 7, that is the Danube transversal, but due to limited financial resources needs help and experience of other European states.
The Minister stressed that this river transversal is important for the development of European transport of goods and that is why Serbia encourages development of information systems and modernisation of navigation roads. However, it carefully analyses all advantages of accepting new European agreements related to navigation roads and works on the integration of European regulations on river traffic into national legislation.
Ilic recalled that realisation of the action plan for the implementation of the agreement on river Sava is underway, adding that it is in the interest of all member countries of the Sava Commission that water management and environmental problems be resolved soon.
Ilic said that Serbia is interested in the continuation of joint work of several interested countries on the sustainable spatial development of theTisa river basin, taking into account the overall natural and cultural heritage, the natural beauty of this area, the connecting of people and improvement of living standards of the local population.
However, the Minister reiterated that in order to make a new strategy of development of navigation roads network, almost 1,600 kilometres long, Serbia needs help and experience of other European partners.
Ilic pointed out that Serbia shares the view that tourism and cultural cooperation in the region will be revived along with the improvement of river transport, and that with intense activity of Danube-basin countries in the resolution of environmental problems, a safer future of the common European house can be secured.
On the first day of the Congress on internal navigation, participants agreed that EU countries must attach more importance to this cheaper and safer means of transport.
