Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Milos Vucevic met today with Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden to Serbia Annika Ben David.
Vucevic wished welcome to Ambassador Ben David and expressed the hope that during the Swedish presidency of the EU Council one of the priorities will be to find opportunities and ways to speed up the European integration process of the Republic of Serbia.
He said that the Republic of Serbia will continue to lead a balanced defence policy, with a long-term strategic determination to maintain the status of a militarily neutral state, while working on the improvement and further qualitative development of relations in the field of defence with partner countries and international organisations, in accordance with national interests and foreign policy priorities.
The Minister of Defence pointed out that, in addition to the preservation of territorial integrity and sovereignty and regional cooperation, the foreign policy goal of the Republic of Serbia is membership in the European Union, referring during the conversation to the visible contribution of the Serbian Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces to the Common Security and Defence Policy of the European Union.
Vucevic underlined that improving cooperation in the field of defence of the two countries is in mutual interest.
Ambassador Ben David, speaking in the context of the Swedish presidency of the EU Council from 1 January 2023, confirmed that Sweden advocates the enlargement of the European Union and that it strongly supports Serbia on the path of European integration.
She pointed out that she is particularly engaged in the further development of cooperation between the Kingdom of Sweden and the Republic of Serbia, with a special focus on issues of the environment, gender equality and democracy, and she also agreed with the need to improve cooperation in the field of defence, according to a statement from the Ministry of Defence.
