Serbia highly appreciates role of Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivica Dacic talked today with Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe Dunja Mijatovic about the situation of human rights and freedoms, transitional justice, women’s rights and gender equality, as well as freedom of expression, assembly and association.

Dacic pointed out that reforms remain our main priority and expressed his gratitude to the Council of Europe for its support in the reform process.

The First Deputy Prime Minister emphasised that it is necessary to strengthen the political dialogue among the members of the Council of Europe, and particularly underlined Serbia's commitment to stability in the region and to ensuring a favourable climate for dialogue and resolving all open issues in a peaceful and responsible manner.

Dacic pointed to numerous steps that have been taken in the area of the rule of law, evaluating it as a clear indication of commitment to European integration and the creation of stable foundations for further development.

The interlocutors exchanged opinions on the state of rights and freedoms of the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija, including the rights and freedoms of returnees, which were analysed in the Commissioner's Memorandum, published after her visit to the province in June last year.

In that document, numerous obstacles to the sustainable return of the Serbian population to Kosovo and Metohija were identified.
