Efficiency of Serbian courts increased

Serbian Minister of Justice Zoran Stojkovic said today upon a visit to the District Court in Smederevo that the situation in the judiciary is looking up and that improved efficiency in some courts has been recorded.
Stojkovic talked with presidents of courts, prosecutors' offices and magistrates' courts of Smederevo, Smederevska Palanka and Velika Plana and said that commercial courts improved their efficiency, while some courts of general jurisdiction improved their efficiency by more than 20%.
Stojkovic said that soon a new law on legal profession will be discussed in parliament, which will regulate the rights and obligations of those practicing law.
The Justice Minister added that according to new legislation, investigation and evidence collection will be conducted by the prosecutor and the police, and not the court.
Mediation will be introduced in criminal procedures so the prosecutor will have more possibilities to reach an agreement on the penalty, damage and compensation in smaller offences.
