After a tour of Belgrade Central Prison, Stojkovic told the press that the prison cell block in the district court will improve security during the transport of indictees through the city. The reduced number of transports through the city zone will help protect citizens and lessen the indictees' chance of escape.
The Central Prison cell block housing inmates who committed the severest crimes has been renovated and the security improved owing to a new electronic system and restructured units of correctional officers. The reconstruction of this block required between eight and ten million dinars.
A new disrupting system will soon be built into the prison building in order to block mobile phone signals inside the prison.
The warden of Belgrade’s Central Prison Miroslav Micic said that a total of three million dinars from the state budget was needed for the reconstruction of two prison exercise yards. There are plans to reconstruct the third, he said, as well as to introduce technical protection and video surveillance of the yards.
"The inmates will thus be able to spend more time out in fresh air, and the current 30 minute walk will be prolonged to 45 minutes", added Micic.
Head of the prison hospital Miodrag Andjelkovic said that two months ago two hospital wards were renovated and added that the remaining nine wards will also be renovated.
Andjelkovic said that after the reconstruction, the basic conditions required by the international community have been fulfilled; they include proper hospitalisation of patients, sufficient inflow of fresh air and light and a suitable heating system.
He pointed out that there are around 500 patients in the prison hospital, adding that conditions in the hospital have been greatly improved thanks to the help of the ministries of justice and finance. Costs of reconstructing each of the two hospital wards were 28 million dinars, he concluded.
