Labus, who opened the expert gathering where the topic of discussion was “Institutional change as a determinant of economic growth of Serbia in 2006”, said that in the upcoming year Serbia will work more on establishing institutional changes. He added that an efficient administration has to be created on the path to the EU, democracy needs to be further developed and a functional market economy must be created.
Addressing students and professors at the Faculty of Economics, Labus said that only optimism as well as a speedy and foundational level adaptation to the norms of the EU can lead Serbia to EU membership.
Labus said that the government will do everything necessary for signing the agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and added that many decisions that the government was required to bring have been made and that the parliament will adopt all the necessary laws very soon.
According to Labus, the privatisation advisor for NIS should be selected, which will be followed by the meeting of the IMF Board of Directors, and that until now everything has gone on according to agreement and there are no problems whatsoever. He also expressed conviction that the Board of Directors will bring a positive decision on the signing of a new agreement with the Republic of Serbia.
Speaking to journalists after addressing students and professors at the Kragujevac Faculty of Economics, he said that the discovery and arrest of former general in the army of Republika Srpska Ratko Mladic is the only way to remove the negative consequences of the report of Hague Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Carla del Ponte to the Security Council of the United Nations.
He said that the report by del Ponte should be taken very seriously, even if at this particular moment it will not lead to any kind of consequences.
