The British government donation is worth $94,000 and is intended for a programme of building capacities for more efficient use of police dogs for sniffing out narcotics, as assistance to law enforcement agencies in Serbia-Montenegro.
UK Ambassador to Serbia-Montenegro David Gowan handed over the keys to a Lada Niva to Minister of Interior Dragan Jocic and said that there is not one state that can deal with organised crime and terrorism on its own, and that is why Britain wishes to help Serbia, since it lies on the Balkan Route.
He explained that the Balkan Route is one of the most remunerative routes for drugs, people and weapons trafficking toward western Europe. The traffic being busy in this area, the authorities cannot supervise and control all vehicles and goods, which is why trained dogs are highly efficient in tracking smugglers.
Gowan added that there are numerous modern centres for training dogs and their instructors in Britain, therefore it has organised a training course for four Serbian dog instructors as a way of helping Serbia-Montenegro in its fight against organised crime.
