Speaking at the opening of a conference themed “EU Perspectives and present condition of countries in the region in the process of EU stabilisation and association”, Parivodic pointed out that it is very important that all Western Balkan countries join the EU.
The rules of cross border cooperation should be simplified in cooperation with the EU Commission, he said, which would also make them more accessible to countries in the region. He added that the model of cooperation used by the Nordic countries could help to further intensify cooperation in the region.
The energy network in the region can be further improved, said the minister, as well as systems dealing with land and air traffic. A region seen as one economic whole could create better conditions for attracting foreign investment, he added.
According to Parivodic, the countries in the region should work on the formation of joint institutions and compatible strategies.
Head of the European Commission to Serbia-Montenegro Josep Lloveras pointed out that the regional aspect is one of the key elements in the process of EU integration, even if countries in one region are not in the same stage.
He said that the EU accession process in the Balkan region has started well, but its final outcome will depend on how well each country fulfils the conditions required by the EU.
Representative of the German embassy in Serbia-Montenegro Martin Graf said that regional cooperation was the starting point for the very founding of the EU, and added that Germany will remain a reliable partner to all countries in the Balkan region on their way to EU accession.
Representative of the German organisation for technical cooperation (GTZ) Milos Baltic pointed out that reform of the legal system is one of the most important tasks that the countries in the region must perform on their path to the EU.
