Speaking at the expert gathering themed “Influence of physics on development of scientific thought in sciences, medicine, sociology and culture“ held yesterday at the Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences, Labus said that Serbian scientists have achieved notable success on a recently finished competition for 10 centres of excellency.
He pointed out that eight of these Serbian centres have been included on the list of institutions that can compete for foreign research funds and cooperate with the most renowned scientific institutes and scientists from abroad.
According to Labus, regional centres of excellency, including six centres of excellency for physics, can count on nearly €2.5 million worth of investment.
Labus stressed that in this year, which has been declared World Year of Physics by the EU, the Serbian government has formed a committee to mark the jubilee year, and authorised the Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences to set up a programme committee and initiate the creation of a programme on the developments in physics.
In his opening speech at today’s gathering, Head of the Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences Nikola Hajdin recalled that exactly 100 years ago Albert Einstein defined general theory of relativity, thanks to which “the new physics“ played a highly important scientific role in the 20th century.
Hajdin said that the Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences has prepared two expert gatherings to mark the jubilee, adding that some other scientific institutions in Serbia have contributed to the event.
