Slobodan Samardzic
In a statement to the Beta news agency, Samardzic said that, as well as establishing fair procedure, it is most important to hold to the principle that there can be no imposed solution. He added, if a solution were to be forced in the negotiations, it would be aggression towards one side, and the aim of the negotiations is to arrive at a collective solution.
He said that it is expected that the special envoy of the UN for talks on the future status of Kosovo-Metohija will be named in the coming week, since the Contact Group for Kosovo-Metohija which will mediate in choosing the talks team for leading the negotiations, is to meet on November 2 in New York.
He said that it is assumed that the work of the Contact Group will be governed by the principles of equality, territorial integrity and state sovereignty.
According to Samardzic, Belgrade expects that the talks begin, that they are open and fair and in a certain phase, they mature into actual negotiations. That means representatives of Belgrade and Pristina make a collective effort at the negotiating table and talk about the future status of Kosovo-Metohija.
Commenting on the remark by the former Finnish President and the most likely candidate for special envoy of the UN for Kosovo-Metohija, Martti Ahtisaari, that NATO forces should remain on the terrain regardless of the future status of Kosovo-Metohija, Samardzic said that it concerns the importance of being realistic.
He said that Kosovo-Metohija is completely unsafe. Paramilitary units are present there, some of them known and some unknown. In any case Kosovo-Metohija is threatened by aggression. At present there is no other force apart from the KFOR that can use military power to prevent the outbreak of aggression by paramilitary and terrorist organisations.
