At the 33rd session of the General Conference of The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) held in Paris, Serbia-Montenegro was elected member of the Executive Board of this specialized UN agency.
In the ballot that took place at the UNESCO’s headquarters, out of 183 member states entitled to vote at the session, 161 voted for Serbia-Montenegro’s membership in the Executive Board.
The Executive Board decides on the policy of this organisation and provides guidelines that are discussed at the General Conference sessions held every two years.
This is the first time that Serbia-Montenegro has become a part of this 58-member body chosen among 191 member states of the UNESCO.
