Non-Aligned Movement remains strongest pillar of multilateralism

A commemorative high-level meeting marking the 65th anniversary of the first conference of the Non-Aligned Movement opened today at the Palace of Serbia, attended by Serbia’s highest-ranking state officials and numerous delegations from Non-Aligned Movement member states.

In his opening address, President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić said that the Non-Aligned Movement remains the strongest pillar of multilateralism, defending the idea that the world must belong to everyone, not only to those whose economic or military power is currently dominant.

He noted that the Non-Aligned are committed to the fundamental principles of the United Nations, under which the voice of every independent country carries the same moral weight regardless of its geographical size or material wealth.

The President expressed his gratitude to all the delegations that came to Belgrade to take part in this special conference, 65 years after the founding of the Non-Aligned Movement.

Vučić also expressed his deep appreciation for the fact that a large number of the Movement’s member states consistently respect Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, providing strong support for preserving the country’s constitutional order and protecting its national interests on the international stage.

Our sincere understanding and mutual solidarity demonstrate that our long-standing partnerships are not merely a memory of a glorious past. They represent a living and effective alliance that has proved itself at every pivotal moment in history, the President said.

According to him, those who founded the Non-Aligned Movement did not create a political alliance but laid firm foundations for the most democratic platform within the United Nations, where decisions are reached through genuine dialogue among all those who share the same dream of freedom.

As he stressed, Serbia preserves the noble legacy of the 1961 Belgrade Conference with particular emotional and historical pride, remaining a steadfast ally of the principles jointly championed by the Non-Aligned Movement.

Our country will continue to preserve its longstanding friendships and, together with the participants of this Movement, defend peace, international law and the right of every state to be respected, he reiterated, adding that the participants of the Non-Aligned Movement can count on Serbia as a sincere and reliable partner.

We do not believe that belonging to one region excludes friendship with other regions. What fundamentally connects us are important principles, such as the UN Charter, the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, equality and the right of every country to decide its own future, the President said.

He underlined that Serbia, in its efforts to preserve its sovereignty and territorial integrity and find a sustainable and compromise-based solution to the issue of Kosovo and Metohija, remains committed to international law and the UN Charter, stressing that what applies to some must apply to all.

The President announced that three new initiatives for cooperation among member states will be launched in Belgrade today – Non-Aligned Digital, the Non-Aligned Movement Film Festival and an international seminar for young diplomats from Non-Aligned Movement countries.

Jessica Alupo, Vice President of Uganda, which currently chairs the Non-Aligned Movement, also addressed the opening of the plenary session, conveying greetings from Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to the participants and sharing his assessment that the Non-Aligned Movement emerged as a rational response to divisions and narrow-mindedness in international relations.
