Reforming UN, strengthening foundations of international order needed

President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić in his address at the General Debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly stated today that the organisation is needed by the world more than ever, but that it must become more efficient, better prepared to address the issues for which it was created, and adapted to today’s reality.

Vučić stated that Serbia supports the UN and the reform of its system, noting the need to anticipate the consequences of a world in which force is once again increasingly openly presented as the most reliable instrument of policy.

The President highlighted the pressures exerted on Serbia to abandon the full implementation of the Brussels Agreement, which bears the EU’s signature.

He recalled that Serbia had fulfilled all its obligations, whereas the only obligation incumbent upon the Albanians, the formation of the Community of Serb Municipalities, remains unfulfilled to this day.

Serbia is on the path to the EU, but its citizens rightly expect a clearer perspective, the President said, noting that Serbia still has much work to do to become a full member of the EU.

Although full membership in the EU remains a strategic priority, we cannot fail to notice the prolonged fatigue regarding the enlargement process, both among certain EU member states and among candidate countries, said Vučić.

That is why, he added, we proposed enabling the Western Balkans to gradually integrate into the European Single Market and gain access to the Schengen Area even prior to full EU membership.

According to him, a stable and integrated Europe, of which Serbia is a part, and the European path do not entail abandoning traditional friendships.
