Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said today during talks with UNMIK Chief Soren Jessen-Petersen that full implementation of standards in Kosovo-Metohija is necessary, and added that their full implementation is a prerequisite for future talks on the status of Kosovo-Metohija.
At a meeting attended by Head of the Coordinating Centre for Kosovo-Metohija Sanda Raskovic-Ivic, Kostunica pointed out that special attention is focused on the report by UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy Kai Eide assessing the implementation of standards for Kosovo.
The Prime Minister said that Serbs living in Kosovo-Metohija are deprived of basic human rights and stressed that these rights must be respected. He reiterated that this can be achieved only by creating conditions for their security, freedom of movement, the return of displaced persons and the protection of cultural and historical heritage.
Petersen told Kostunica that Eide’s report on standards has been handed over to the UN Secretary-General, but he didn’t inform the Serbian side on the content of the report. Petersen agreed that standards in Kosovo-Metohija must be fully implemented and he is committed to this type of cooperation with Belgrade. He also stressed the importance of decentralisation as the best way to achieve multiethnicity in Kosovo-Metohija.
Kostunica called for all recent and previous war crimes against Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija to be solved and for all perpetrators to be brought to justice. The Prime Minister also recalled that the international community has the obligation to prevent ethnically- motivated violence.
