Head of the Coordinating Centre for Kosovo-Metohija Sanda Raskovic-Ivic said today opening the international conference "Kosovska Mitrovica 1999-2005, the northern part", that Serbia has the right and obligation to protect its interests, citizens, property and cultural heritage in Kosovo-Metohija.

Raskovic-Ivic said that Serbia has that right according to the UN Security Council Resolution 1244, which defines Kosovo-Metohija as an integral part of Serbia. However, that right is constantly exposed to attacks by interim institutions of self-rule, helped by the UNMIK and the UN Secretary-General Special Representative.
She said that Belgrade only wants to show to the international community on the example of Kosovska Mitrovica that the model applied in that part of the province is the only one which guarantees survival to Kosovo Serbs.
That is the source of the Serbian government's plan on decentralisation and the wish to introduce the system of territorial wholes with Serb majority, which would protect the remaining Serbs and secure the survival and a life worthy of man to those who want to return, Raskovic-Ivic said.
