Addressing the delegates at a UN General Assembly session, Draskovic pointed out that Serbia-Montenegro, as the largest country on the territory of ex-Yugoslavia, is committed to good neighbourly relations, as well as towards Europe.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs said that a united Europe, to which we belong, is our goal and our future. He also added that unfortunately, in one part of Serbia, in Kosovo-Metohija, political extremism, often combined with terrorism and which ultimately demands the creation of another Albanian country, represents a serious obstacle for the entire Balkan region.
He called for the respect of the principle that state borders must not be altered or renamed by force, and that Serbs, Montenegrins, and other non-ethnic Albanians in the southern province must be able to enjoy the rights guaranteed by the United Nations Charter.
Draskovic said that he encourages the compliance with the condemnation of terrorism committed anywhere, by anyone and regardless of motives.
That puts an end to the policy of double standards, so the murderers of children in Beslan and in Kosovo or anywhere else will not be treated as anything but terrorists, said Draskovic.
According to him, Serbia-Montenegro fully supports the concept of a new collective security, the prohibition on production diffusion, weapons of mass destruction trade and usage, the formation of a commission for peace building, the Council for Human Rights, the establishing of a fund for sanation and protection from natural disasters and environmental protection.
Without accomplishing these and other commitments from the final document of this summit, with the accent on solidarity assistance to poor and developing countries, there is no achieving of goals from the United Nations Millennium Declaration, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The three-day UN summit in New York, organised on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of this organisation, gathered more than 150 heads of states and heads of governments in order to examine the success in the fulfilling of the Millennium Development Aims and the world organisation’s reforms.
