“The implementation of the agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the launching of negotiations on the stabilisation and association agreement with the European Union, scheduled for October 5, 2005, are the most important goals that must be achieved in the course of this year so that the ongoing reforms and Serbia-Montenegro’s integration in the EU could successfully continue.
The adoption of the so-called Law on the abolishment of the Law on the establishment of the Serbian Oil Industry (NIS), was one of the necessary and unavoidable pre-requisites for the reconstruction of this public company, as well as for the Paris Club of Creditors’ debt write-off, worth about $700 million, and for the further successful cooperation with the IMF.
The Serbian government has demonstrated that it established successful cooperation with international organisations and institutions, with the European Union, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague, the IMF, etc. In addition, the Serbian government has proved that it is committed to improving working conditions of employees, especially by establishing the Social-Economic Council. The Serbian government’s destabilisation at this moment would inevitably hold back the beginning of negotiations with the EU and undermine the implementation of the arrangement with the IMF, which would cause invaluable damage to the interests of Serbia’s citizens.
Considering these facts, we have no other choice than to condemn the behaviour of SDP representatives in the Serbian parliament as irresponsible. At the same time, we are placing the functions we hold at the disposal of the Serbian Prime Minister,” reads the statement of the officials, elected by the Serbian government, at the proposal of SDP.
