Covic, Alexeyev call for UNMIK, KFOR overhaul

Russia’s representative in the six-nation Contact Group on Kosovo, Alexeandar Alexeyev, and Head of the Coordinating Centre for Kosovo-Metohija Nebojsa Covic agreed at a meeting today that UNMIK and KFOR should be reorganised as soon as possible, particularly as regards their capacity to deal with mass riots and ensure security for non-Albanians in the province.
Covic and Alexeyev also agreed that UNMIK, KFOR, the Contact Group, and the UN Security Council should be more efficient in order to restore stability in Kosovo-Metohija, according to a statement from the Coordinating Centre.
Alexeyev took part in meetings between Contac Group and the political leaderships of Kosovo Serbs and ethnic-Albanians in Pristina yesterday, during which an international group for support to Kosovo was officially established.
The group, which includes diplomats from the United States, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and Russia, will meet every six weeks to assess progress in the implementation of standards for a democratic society in Kosovo. It will also provide political and economic assistance to the province, reads the statement.
