Director of the Office for Kosovo-Metohija Marko Djuric today announced that US Ambassador to the United Nations Nick Haley, in front of the US administration, asked the UN Secretary General to withdraw UNMIK from Kosovo.
At an extraordinary press conference in the government of Serbia, Djuric said that our country believes that the adoption of this initiative represents opposition to peace efforts and the return to pressure policy, stressing that Serbia will oppose this initiative to all arguments - both legal and political.
The initiative is even more dangerous because it comes at a time when provisional Kosovo institutions are trying to form an army of Kosovo, said Djuric, adding that the only framework for the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue is the interim UN regime.
This initiative will be an encouragement to the separatists in Pristina to continue with the policy of "long pipes", which will contribute to the continuation of unilateral action in the international community, and not seeking a solution for the relations between Belgrade and Pristina at the negotiating table, he explained.
Djuric once again warned and reminded that the mandate of the UN Mission in Kosovo was not fulfilled in yet another key segment, which is the return of expelled and displaced persons.
According to Djuric, the UNMIK Mission for the past 18 years has not yet fulfilled any of its main tasks for which it was established, which is the return of more than 200,000 expelled Serbs and other non-Albanians from Kosovo.
He estimated that the withdrawal of the UN Mission at the moment would be a recognition of failure and capitulation in the struggle to achieve some of the key goals for which the UN was established.
As he pointed out, he will make consultations and talk with friends and partners of Serbia - permanent members of the UN Security Council, Russia, China, as well as other members of the Council.
