Norwegian diplomat Kai Eide was appointed last night UN Special Envoy for the implementation of standards in Kosovo-Metohija, by a decision of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. The mission of the UN Special Envoy in Kosovo is to thoroughly examine the implementation of standards in the Serbian southern province, which is currently under the rule of the international administration, in line with the UN Security Council Resolution 1244.

Eide, the former Norwegian Ambassador to the NATO, will hold talks with Belgrade and Pristina and representatives of the international community to assess the situation on the field and decide which further steps should be made, the UN said in a statement.
He will also be tasked with examining preconditions for launching the process of establishing the future status of Kosovo.
