Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica received today Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the OSCE Mission to Kosovo-Metohija Werner Wnendt and underlined that the solution for Kosovo-Metohija should be found through a compromise, in the form of an expanded autonomy, based on the existing high level of autonomy enjoyed by EU countries.

Kostunica said that a solution for Kosovo-Metohija should be found while fully respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state union of Serbia-Montenegro. He emphasised that regional stability will be improved by preserving the state border of Serbia-Montenegro.
The Serbian Prime Minister said that it is necessary to fulfil standards in the province, secure conditions for the return of exiled Serbs and protect human rights of Serbs and other non-Albanians. Kostunica reminded that the Serb community in Kosovo-Metohija has limited freedom of movement, lacks the protection of basic human rights, and that the return of the exiled Serb population has not yet been carried out.
Wnendt, who took over the OSCE Mission in Kosovo-Metohija in late April this year, agreed that it is necessary to create conditions for the return of the Serbs to their homes, and stressed that the most important thing was to ensure the respect of human rights in Kosovo-Metohija.
