A statement by the Office for Kosovo-Metohija says that Djuric called on all Serbs in Kosovo- Metohija, especially our compatriots in Gorazdevac, to remain calm and not give in to provocations by Albanian extremists.
This morning, about 3 o’clock, unknown ethnic Albanians committed several armed attacks in the territory of Gorazdevac.
The extremists were shooting with firearms throughout Gorazdevac, they knocked the monument to victims of the NATO bombing in the city centre, shot at the house owned by Sasa Petrovic, torched the car of Srboljub Kolasinca and burned the family tobacco shop of the Vuksanovic family.
This terrorist act is another reminder of how far from normal is the situation in which the Serbs in our southern province live and far from standards that exist in societies whose ambition is to become part of the European Union.
The unambiguous aim of the attack is to intimidate the Serbian population in Kosovo-Metohija in order to force it to move out, and the "Kristallnacht" in Gorazdevac has all the hallmarks of terrorism.
Djuric expressed belief that the majority of Albanians in Kosovo-Metohija do not want an escalation of violence in their community, and the provisional institutions of self-government in Pristina now have the opportunity to demonstrate their maturity by finding the perpetrators of these mindless and unprovoked terrorist acts.
The Director of the Office for Kosovo-Metohija appealed to the international community to react to this situation with the utmost seriousness in order to avoid further threats to the safety of Serbs and violation of the fragile stability in Kosovo-Metohija.
This is a warning to everyone how easily the security situation in Kosovo-Metohija can be destabilised and what could be the consequences of inadequate response to political extremism of the opposition in Pristina, which with its chauvinist rhetoric and actions made all non-Albanians in the southern province a potential target, reads the statement.
