Speaking at a conference of journalists and of the Diaspora and Serbs in the region, which is held today in Belgrade, he indicated that there are between three and four million citizens of Serbian origin living abroad, which is almost a third of Serbian population.
The Republic of Serbia is obliged to protect the rights and interests of its citizens abroad and to develop and promote relations of the diaspora and the homeland, he added.
Under the 2006 Declaration of the government of the Republic of Serbia, relations between the homeland and the diaspora were declared by the highest state and national interest, recalled Dacic, adding that further steps were taken with the adoption of the Law on Diaspora and Serbs in the region in 2009 and Strategy for preserving and strengthening relations between the homeland and the diaspora and the homeland and Serbs in the region in 2011.
One-third of our people lives outside Serbia, which is a potential that should be used, Dacic said at the sixth conference of journalists and media of diaspora and Serbs in the region.
This is particularly important at this moment, when influential representatives of diaspora can help protect Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija, and help us resist the appropriation of Serbian monuments by those who did not want Serbs to be there, let alone trace of their existence, Dacic pointed out.
