Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications Rasim Ljajic sent a letter today to European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Johannes Han, asking for an urgent response of the EU to the behaviour of the Croatian border authorities.
Ljajic said that customs and police authorities of Croatia have been blocking the entry of trucks carrying goods from Serbia to Croatia the whole day, without any foundation and in violation of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement between Serbia and the EU.
Croatia, as a member of the European Union, is obliged to comply with all provisions of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement between Serbia and the EU, and that is why our country expects a reaction from Brussels in order to urgently address this problem.
Ljajic asks the competent EU authorities who will compensate for the enormous damage that the Serbian economy and exporters are suffering, given the fact that a large part of the goods in the detained trucks is perishable and with short shelf life.
According to Ljajic, such an unreasonable decision of the Croatian institutions also undermines the basic principles of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), which rest on the free movement of goods and services.
