The Serbian government stated that Colonel Vujadin Popovic made the decision to surrender voluntarily to the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY), after the talks with Serbian Minister of Interior Dragan Jocic.
Colonel Popovic said that he has confidence in the government and that his decision is in the best interest of his family, people and the state, and that the fulfilment of this obligation is the best way to help his people and the state.
He said that he has decided to turn himself in because he does not want the entire Serbian people to be held hostage because of him and voiced hope that in this way he will help the state meet its international obligations.
Minister Jocic said that Popovic's decision is patriotic, responsible and in the best interest of the people and the state. He confirmed that the Serbian government will grant guarantees for Popovic's pre-trial release and secure all necessary assistance to his family.
Vujadin Popovic will travel to The Hague on April 14, in the company of Minister Zoran Loncar.
