Unsatisfactory rate of return of displaced persons from Kosovo

Head of the Office for Kosovo-Metohija Marko Djuric and representative of the UN Secretary General and Head of the UN Office in Belgrade Peter Due spoke yesterday on matters within the competence of the UN Mission in Kosovo, pursuant to UN SC Resolution 1244.

Djuric said that the return of internally displaced people in the past remained in the shadow of political developments, adding that the rate of return is unsatisfactory, which is why this issue should be approached in a new way.
Due noted that the approach to the problems of displaced persons should include UNMIK and UNHCR, as well as a specialised agency from the UN system with a mandate to work with refugees and displaced persons.
The United Nations are available for further cooperation in matters relating to IDPs and their return, said Due.
